GRADE 3/4
Grades 3 and 4 are important years in a child’s development. Students at this age are beginning to take more independence in their learning and more responsibility for their own behaviour. Students are taught strategies to help them stay resilient in the face of new challenges and learn the social skills required to collaborate with others. LITERACY In Grades 3 and 4 students begin to read and write more complex texts than in previous years. In reading, they learn strategies to help them understand and analyse what they read. In writing, students are helped to write longer and more complicated texts than in the younger years. NUMERACY Students continue to develop their math skills in Grade 3 and 4. They learn mental strategies to help them solve real life number problems quickly and efficiently. Students also learn to read maps, identify shapes, measure length and area and calculate using money. INFORMATION COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICT) ICT skills will be an essential requirement of many of the jobs of the future. Grade 3 and 4 students at MPPS learn how to program computers (coding) to create digital products like videos and games. Additionally, they learn about how computer systems work and about the importance of cybersafety. SCIENCE AND INQUIRY Science and Inquiry learning in Grades 3 and 4 allow students to ask questions and learn more about the world around them through hands on investigations. In Science students explore many questions such as “what causes day and night?” and “what causes things to melt and freeze?” In Inquiry they learn about topics such as Aboriginal history and Australia’s democracy. |
