Numeracy

Moomba Park Primary School Is a ‘Primary Mathematics Specialist’ School that offers a comprehensive Numeracy program that is driven by the most current research and evidence-based practices

Our aim is to develop mathematicians that have the skills, knowledge and learning dispositions to be successful beyond their primary school years.

We drive our school mission through our Numeracy program by fostering an inclusive, supportive, engaging environment where students are inspired to become resilient, life-long learners.

Teachers provide authentic, real-life problems that allow students to make connections to mathematics in their everyday life.

Our Numeracy sessions have a clear mathematical focus that explicitly teach concepts from the 3 strands of the Victorian Curriculum: Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability.

A Typical Numeracy Lesson at Moomba Park

Launch

Students are given their challenging task for the session, where key vocabulary is unpacked and any clarifying questions are asked.

Fluency

Students are all involved in a short and sharp warm up, practising a certain skill.

Summary

Teachers facilitate a student-led discussion where successful and unsuccessful strategies are shared and the mathematical focus (the key understanding) of the lesson is unpacked.

Explore

Students jump into the ‘learning pit’ and work independently at first to solve the problem, students then have the opportunity to work with peers and problem solve together.

We have a strong emphasis on the proficiencies, which drive the mathematics and ability of students to work mathematically, they include:

Understanding, Fluency, Problem Solving and Reasoning. Another proficiency that is critical in building well-rounded mathematicians is learner disposition. This refers to students developing productive habits and actions, such as showing resilience when faced with a challenging maths task or independently trialling strategies to solve a problem.
